BODMER, KARL. Péhriska-Rúhpa. Moennitarri Warrior in the Costume of the Dog Danse. [Tab. 23]. Hand-colored aquatint engraving by René Rollet after Bodmer, pulled from the original copper plates. 25 1/2x19 1/2 inche sheet size. [Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922]

  • Notes: Perhaps the greatest image to emerge from the picturing of the American West, and certainly Bodmer's most famous, this portrait of Péhriska-Rúhpa ("Two Ravens"), the warrior and chief of the Hidatsa, encapsulates the vanished era of the Plains Indian.
