- Notes: Bontemps (1902-1973), teacher, poet, and novelist published his first novel "God Sends Sunday" in 1931 and later worked closely with Langston Hughes and Jack Conroy writing for younger readers. From 1943 until his retirement, he was head librarian at Fisk University.
