(BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS.) The Address of the Hon. Abraham Lincoln . . . Delivered at Cooper Institute.

THE ORIGINAL OWNER WAS ON STAGE WITH LINCOLN AT COOPER UNION (BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS.) The Address of the Hon. Abraham Lincoln . . . Delivered at Cooper Institute. 32 pages. 8vo, original white glazed wrappers printed in gilt, moderate wear and soiling; foxing to title page only; inscribed on title page "Hon. Thomas B. Stillman, with the regards of Charles C. Nott." New York: George F. Nesbitt, 1860

  • Notes: This authoritative edition of Lincoln''s 27 February 1860 Cooper Union address was published later that year with extensive footnotes by Charles C. Nott and Cephas Brainerd of the Young Men''s Republican Union, the group which had invited Lincoln to speak in New York. Among the distinguished local Republicans on stage with Lincoln during his famous 27 February 1860 Cooper Union speech was Police Commissioner Thomas B. Stillman (1806-1866), the proprietor of a steamship line who also owned the Novelty Iron Works with the Rev. Eliphalet Nott (1773-1866)--the grandfather of the pamphlet''s editor Charles C. Nott. This copy is inscribed by Charles Nott to his grandfather''s business partner--and one of the few men who stood on the stage with Lincoln that day.
Monaghan''s usually reliable Lincoln Bibliography states that this pamphlet was reprinted in 1907, and that the page number "32" was added to the final page only in the reprint. He was apparently wrong, as this copy has the "32", and the man to whom it is inscribed died in 1866. Monaghan 68.
