[ Books ] CRANE, HART. The Bridge: A Poem. Three photographic platesby Walker Evans. 4to, printed wrappers, disbound with defective spine covers soiled; front and rear panels only of original slipcase. Paris: Black Sun Press, 1930 E5,000/7,000 ONE OF 200 NUMBERED COPIES.WARMLY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY CRANE TO HIS ASSIS-TANT PEGGY BABCOCK IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION: "For Peggy whose `turning shoulders wind the hours' with love always, Hart. June `30." This copy descends directly from the estate of Peggy Babcock, who became Crane's driving force behind producing The Bridge for publication. He presented it to her at a party she threw for him to celebrate the publication of the book in June of 1930. At this particularly difficult time in his life and just two years before his death, Crane, whose behavior was erraticmuch of the time, was still fighting depression and a crippling dependence on alcohol. It was Peggy who acted as his sounding board, compiler, editor, typist, and revisionist, struggling to get it to Black Sun in time for its proposed publication date.
