London: Bogue, 1853 E350/500 FIRSTILLUSTRATED EDITION, INSCRIBED BY LONGFELLOW to his step-mother-in-law Harriet Sumner Appleton, in pencil: "H.S.A from H.W.L." Harriet was the second wife of Nathan Appleton whose daughter Frances Elizabeth became Longfellow's second wife and the model for the heroine of Hyperion. Nathan Appleton attested to the provenance, also in pencil, signed with his initials below Longfellow's; his calling card is alsomounted to the front pastedown. BAL 12370.
