Boris Karloff's Manhattan

Boris Karloff

Autograph Manuscript Signed,

a statement of his impressions of New York City [published as "A Few Words About Our City" in Don Freeman's Newsstand: A Journal of One Man's Manhattan, (April 1941)]. 1¼ pages, tall 8vo, written on two sheets; horizontal folds.

Np, [1941].

  • Notes: "How can one begin to get even an impression of the meaning of New York--a thousand cities from all the world rolled into one. Each street is different, each avenue unlike. Surface things that catch the eye are the multiplicity of very small shops all filled with treasures, elderly Scotties taking their walks solemnly . . . . Central Park on Sunday after a fall of snow, filled with kids on skates, skis, sleds and you can hear them a mile [away]. And every evening at dusk, the miracle of the lights coming on in the windows of the incredible buildings & staging a show that is so beautiful & becomes even more wonderful when one realizes that the lights go on every night . . . . The biggest city . . . loving without fear, blackouts & indecencies created by madmen & slowly but surely seeing to it that the rest of the world shall live in the open & in light as we do here. . . ."
