BORIS LOVET-LORSKI (1899-1973) MME. ANNA ROBENNE / RUSSIAN DANCER. Circa 1925.
80x40 1/4 inches. The Hegemen Print, New York.
Condition B+: paper loss, repaired tears and creases along vertical and horizontal folds. Three sheets. Framed.
There is very little biographical information to be found regarding the main character in this superb dance poster. Although photographs of her do appear in Hollywood magazines from the 1920s as well as photos of her taken by Herman Mishkin (the official photographer of the Metropolitan Opera between 1910 and 1932). The sensuous profile of the dancer, combined with a cubist treatment of the transparent veils that hardly cover her body, along with the abstract spotlight-beams is spectacular. The image is pure Art Deco in a gradation of black, gray and white. Lorski was a Lithuanian born artist mostly known for his sculpture. New York's Steinway Hall was originally located on 14th street in Manhattan, but in October of 1925 opened its doors at 100 East 57th Street.
