BOUTTATS, GASPAR. Noua Delineatio Geographica generalis Apostolicarum peregrinationum S Francisci Xauerii Indiarum & Japoniae [etc.].

BOUTTATS, GASPAR. Noua Delineatio Geographica generalis Apostolicarum peregrinationum S Francisci Xauerii Indiarum & Japoniae [etc.]. Engraved folding map, 195x415 mm, ample margins; some restoration at edges and along folds but still very presentable; matted. Antwerp?, circa 1660

  • Notes: Curious map showing the track of Francis Xavier's travels for his apostolic mission. Japan is represented from various early models dating back a hundred years before the production of this map. California is presented as an island. This is a curious mapping of Japan given its late date and given the fact that Bouttats produced another map of Xavier's travels (1663) where Japan is represented using the much more contemporary Blancus/Moreira model (see preceding lot).
