  • Notes: Ward Lamon (1828-1893) was a partner in Lincoln's law firm in the 1850s, and served as the president's personal bodyguard during the Civil War. After General Lee's surrender, Lincoln sent Lamon to the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia to oversee the surrender. It was during Lamon's absence that Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, at Ford's Theatre, on April 14, 1865.
