BRASSAÏ. Paris de Nuit.

BRASSAÏ.
Paris de Nuit.

Text by Paul Morand. Illustrated with 60 rich, moody gravure reproductions of Brassaï's photographs. 4to, photo-pictorial wrappers with a spiral binding, lightly worn with creases at edges; housed in a custom black clamshell box. Roth 76; Parr/Badger I 134; Hasselblad 110. FIRST EDITION.
Paris: Édition Arts et Métiers Graphiques, [1933]

  • Condition: This is a gorgeous and nearly fine copy of Brassaï's iconic "Paris de Nuit". This important title exemplifies the photographer's compellingly atmospheric nighttime image-making.

The photo-pictorial covers are very clean and show minimal evidence of light rubbing and wear along the extreme edges of both the front and rear covers. The spiral binding is very good. As is typical, the extreme top and bottom of the left edge of the front cover (within the spiral binding) also shows extremely tiny chips. One of the spirals has caused a tiny tear at the second bottom punched hole of the front cover. Also, there is a faint linear impression near the center left edge, and one diagonal crease in the upper edge. On the rear cover, there are a few handling marks near the center left edge and a small crease on the lower left edge.

Internally, the reproductions are rich and dimensional. Occasionally the thickly-inked plates show faint scattered rubs to the surface, but these are only visible upon close inspection and are not distracting.

Overall an unusual tight and crisp copy, without many of the typical condition issues associated with the title.

Housed in a clamshell box of black linen with title label on the upper cover and spine ;in very fine condition.

"Brassai's nocturnal vision of Paris is so well known, and his book Paris de Nuit has been so influential - Paris de Nuit is also a ravishing book object in a purely physical sense. The printing represents arguably the most luscious gravure ever seen, the blacks being so richand deep that after handling the book one expects to find sooty deposits all over one's
fingers." Parr and Badger, Volume 1, p. 134.
