Brewster, Anna Mary Richards (1870-1952)
A Church at Rapallo, Italy.

1933.

Oil on canvas; 210 x 145 mm; 8¼ x 5¾ in.

"Brewster's paintings give ample evidence of her solid training, her professionalism, and her lifelong dedication to her craft. [...] The quality that consistently shines through all her work is a fastidious concern with pictorial depth and architectonic structure. She liked well-built compositions in which forms adhere to readable relationships to one another." (Quoted from Anna Richards Brewster: American Impressionist, edited by Judith Kafka Maxwell, University of California Press, 2008.)

In 1933, the Brewsters traveled to Italy, visiting Rome, Florence, Venice and the Italian Lake district. Anna spent four months (winter and spring) at Rapallo, and produced approximately 300 sketches during this time.
