Brewster, Anna Mary Richards (1870-1952) The Weald, Cambridge, England.

Brewster, Anna Mary Richards (1870-1952)
The Weald, Cambridge, England.

1899.

Oil on canvas; 230 x 330 mm; 9 x 13 in.

Brewster was lucky to be raised by a writer and an artist in Philadelphia. At the time she attended Cowles Art School in Boston, women had gained greater, although not complete access to art education. She collaborated with her mother, the author Anna Matlack, contributing illustrations to A New Alice in the Old Wonderland and a few other publications at the turn of the 19th century. Brewster was a very successful internationally known artist during her lifetime, a difficult period for women's visibility in the field.

Provenance
Estate of the artist.
Winthrop Gallery, Indianapolis with label.
Private collection, New York.

  • Condition: Canvas has been mounted to a panel by a conservator, likely the resin and wax method.
