(BRINLEY SALE.) Group of material relating to the sale, including J. F. Sabin's copy of the Fifth Part, signed on the front wrapper and annotated throughout, a small file of newspaper clippings related to the sale (a few loose, but most carefully inlaid into larger sheets and very well preserved), separately-printed sales announcements for each of the first four parts (with duplicates of the first part), and a copy of the catalogue for the third part (defective, but priced and presumably Sabin's as well). Format and condition vary. New York, 1879-93

  • Notes: Joseph F. Sabin (the son of the famed bibliographer, bookseller and auctioneer) continued his father's business after his death in 1881. Sabin the elder served as auctioneer of the first 3 parts of the Brinley Sale. This copy of the Fifth Part of the sale is priced throughout, with some buyer information and other information in code. The newspaper clippings provide a fascinating contemporary look at the reaction to the monumental sale, and were presumably assembled by Sabin himself.
