Notes: from the collection of horace bristol; to the g. ray hawkins gallery; to a private california collector. During the winter of 1937-38, Horace Bristol approached John Steinbeck about collaborating on a project about the migrant camps in Central Valley, California. Together they interviewed families and jointly discovered the Joads--Ma, Tom, Winfield, Little Ruthie, Grandma, and Grandpa--whose experiences as displaced "Okies" were later immortalized in Steinbeck's novel.
After Bristol completed the photographs Steinbeck withdrew from the project, deciding that his text might be best utilized in a novel. Although the edition limitation is listed as 20, it is believed that only 15 portfolios were completed.
