(BROOKLYN BRIDGE) Report of John A. Roebling, C.E., to the Presidentand Directors of the New York Bridge Company, on the Proposed East River Bridge. Brooklyn, 1870. Lithographed folding plan. 48 pages. 8vo disbound; scattered browning, folding plan detached. E200/300 Although printed in 1870, this pamphlet, which outlines the proposed construction of the bridge and its estimated costs, was written in 1867. John Augustus Roebling, the inventor of wire cable and the initial designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, died in 1869, but was succeeded by his son. His son, however, suffered an accident during the construction of the bridge in 1872, and was forced to direct its construction from his home on Columbia Heights. At the time of its completion, the Brooklyn Bridge was not only the longest suspension bridge in the world, but the highest structure in New York City, as well.
