Brown's novel was originally published in London with a slightly different title, and Clotel was the daughter of Thomas lefferson's mistress Sally Hemming. When the book appeared in the United States as a cheap dime-novel Clotel had become Clotelle and was a Senator's daughter. By the time this edition appeared, substantial changes had again been made.
