Frontispiece, 4 engraved plates. 12mo, publisher's cloth, base of spine slightly frayed; small dampstain to initial 5 leaves in margin. Boston, 1867 FIRST EDITION THUS, AND SECOND AMERICAN EDITION, with additions and changes. Brown's novel was originally published in London with a slightly different title, and Clotel was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson's mistress Sally Hemming. When the book appeared in the United States (as a cheap dime-novel) Clotel had become Clotelle and was a Senator's daughter. By the time this edition appeared, substantial changes had again been made. The last part of the book was expanded to include the Civil War.
