BROWN, WILLIAM WELLS
Clotelle: or the Colored Heroine. A Tale of the Southern States. Frontispiece, 4 engraved plates. 12mo, publisher's cloth, base of spine slightly frayed; small dampstain to initial 5 leaves in margin. Boston, 1867 FIRST EDITION THUS, AND SECOND AMERICAN EDITION, with additions and changes. Brown's novel was originally published in London with a slightly different title, and Clotel was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson's mistress Sally Hemming. When the book appeared in the United States (as a cheap dime-novel) Clotel had become Clotelle and was a Senator's daughter. By the time this edition appeared, substantial changes had again been made. The last part of the book was expanded to include the Civil War. Blockson, 101 Influential Books 32 (London edition); Sabin 8590 (earlier editions).
