PLANNING PERFORMANCE OF ODYSSEUS BRUCH, MAX. Autograph Letter Signed, to conductor of the Birmingham Philharmonic Union Charles Swinnerton Heap ("Dear Dr. Heap"), in English, inquiring about arrangements for the performance of his Odysseus in Birmingham on December 28, including rehearsal dates, casting, printed score availability, etc. Signed vertically in the outer margin of the terminal page. 4 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; remnants of prior mounting at right edge of terminal page, minor loss at upper edge of terminal leaf, folds. Liverpool, 28 October 1882

  • Notes: ". . . 1) So far as I know, the concert will take place on the 27th of December. What arrangements have been made for the orchestra rehearsals? We are accustomed, like all German people, to celebrate Christmas Eve . . . and [I] could not be in Birmingham before the evening of the 25th Dec.
"2) If the committee wishes that I conduct the performance, I think it desirable that I conduct the last piano rehearsal. I could manage to come to Birmingham a few days before Christmas for one night.
"3) Which orchestra do you have?
"4) Who will take the part of Odysseus and Nausicaa, etc.?
"5) Is Mrs. Bruch's engagement settled?
    "6) Mr. Simrock . . . sent me one hundred copies of Odysseus for the performance . . . Novb. 22 1881. . . . 71 copies would be at the disposal of your society . . . ."
Bruch's wife, Clara, was a talented contralto who performed the role of Penelope in Bruch's Odysseus in London and Birmingham between 1882 and 1883.
