BRYCE, ALEXANDER. A Map of the North Coast of Britain.
BRYCE, ALEXANDER. A Map of the North Coast of Britain. Double-page engraved map of the coast of Scotland, 495x700mm, wide margins; hand-colored; soiled, large tear from top margin into image, other edge tears; linen-backed at an early date. sold as is. [Edinburgh: Philosophical Society of Edinburgh, 1744]
- Notes: Uncommon mapping of the region, with much information on tides, currents and rocks, produced for ship captains trying to navigate the waters. Bryce, a well-known geometrician, surveyed the region at his own expense over a three year period. The map was subsequently published by the Philosophical (now Royal) Society of Edinburgh and was used by Arrowsmith in his mapping of the region. We could find no copies of this scarce map coming to auction. This example in need of some expert (and worthwhile) restoration.
