(BURT GOLDBLATT--JAZZ MUSICIANS)
An archive with 120 dynamic photographs by Goldblatt, a renowned New York jazz photographer and album designer.
Encompassing a stylistic range of hard-hitting portraits, with intimate studio recordings, gritty and energetic nightclub performances, and cool practice sessions, as well as a group of artfully angled and composed images, evocative of the genre's free-form nature. Portraying Jazz and Blues legends, from Johnny Hodges, Milt Hinton, Gene Krupa, Ray Vance, Chris Connor, and Dickie Wells; to Billy Strayhorn, Sy Oliver, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, and John Lee Hooker. Silver prints, the images measuring approximately 8x10 inches (20.3x25.4 cm.), with a variety of Goldblatt's hand stamps, and some with notations or affixed labels on verso. 1950s-70s

  • Notes:

Burt Goldblatt (1924-2006) was a photographer, graphic designer, art director, and author. He worked mainly within the Jazz scene of New York City, often photographing at nightclubs and recording sessions. Goldblatt was also a prolific album designer, producing avant-garde artwork for numerous record labels including Bethlehem, Decca, Atlantic, and Jolly Roger. Many of the complex covers montaged Goldblatt''s own photographs with overlays of dynamic color fields, X-rays, and expressive illustrations.

A number of the photographs present in this archive are reproduced in Goldblatt''s seminal 1983 publication entitled Jazz Gallery One.
