"Burton's approach to mental illness was so advanced for his time that his book had no immediate predecessors and no immediate successors, although it influenced much of English writing in later centuries. Burton recognized the foremost psychodynamic components of melancholia and described some of the essential principles of psychoananlysis; Sir William Osler called The Anatomy of Melancholy 'the greatest medical treatise ever written by a layman.'"
