(BUSINESS--DIRECTORIES.) CALIFORNIA. VINSTON, WARREN C & ANITA GRANT, Compilers. California Negro Directory and Classified Buyers Guide for October 1941 * California Negro Directory and Classified Buyers Guide for 1942-43. Copious illustrations. 96 pages and 238 pages respectively. Large 4tos, original printed pictorial stiff wrappers; some discoloration to the fore-edge of the first volume, otherwise both in exceptionally good condition, given the cheap war-time pulp paper and production. Los Angeles: New Age Publishing Co, 1941-42

  • Notes: These guides are particularly interesting in that they reflect how the course of the war effected business, including the stepped-up war-time production. The volume for 1942-1943 is not only twice the size of the previous year, several things are immediately noticeable. First, the covers of 1942-1943 volume now bear American flags in each corner, with "Freedom of Speech," "Freedom of Religion," "Freedom of Assemblage," and "Freedom of the Press" under each flag. Additionally, the center has a stiff cardboard insert from Local A26, the African-American chapter of The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Welders, and Helpers of America," with a history of the union on one side and a facsimile of the membership certificate for the black fraternal Auxiliary Lodge of the Union on the reverse. Los Angeles and other port cities on the West Coast became vital centers for ship-building for the Pacific campaign of the War. And finally, the size of the 1942-1943 directory reflects a change in the size of the black community, swelling to more than double as good jobs in the defense industry opened up. These guides provide an excellent prime resource for the study of Southern California's black population during the War years.
