Autograph Letter Signed, to Elizabeth Buffum Chace ("My Dear Miss Chace"), expecting a visit from her and her mother, commenting on the good health and travel plans of his own mother, anticipating an around-the-world trip, and mentioning the recent death of [Alexander Turney] Stewart, and promising noble actions. 4 pages, small 8vo, monogrammed stationery, written on a folded sheet; moderate soiling to upper half of terminal page (but still very legible), faint scattered staining (touching signature). Np, 12 April 1876

    In 1878, Carnegie toured the world; he wrote of his adventures in his book, Notes of a Trip Round the World, New York, 1879.
    Alexander Turney Stewart (1803-1876) was an Irish-American merchant who had built one of the largest dry goods and retail operations in the world, making him one of the wealthiest men in history.
