(BUSINESS.) PERRY, HEMAN E. The Standard Life Insurance Company, Citizen's Trust Company and the Service Company (cover title). Illustrations from photographs by Professor Charles Battie, Professor of Photography at Tuskegee. 51 pp. Small folio, original brown suede, stamped in gilt. (Atlanta, circa 1923)

  • Notes: An elaborately produced history of the Standard Life Insurance Company founded by Heman Perry (1873-1929). Perry, the son a Texas farmer, built an insurance empire which by 1922 was worth over 22 million dollars and employed over 2500 workers--all black. Standard ran a half dozen other businesses, all black-owned. Unfortunately, like many businesses that diversify, Standard Life went under in 1925, a victim of its own success.
  • Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries'' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
