(BUSINESS.) Promotional brochure for a new all-Black neighborhood near Shreveport, Louisiana. Double-sided illustrated broadsheet, 19 x 25 inches; 2 short tape repairs at folds, moderate dampstaining and wear. Fort Worth, TX: The Trentman Co., circa 1925

  • Notes: Cedar View was a suburb of Shreveport, LA, which was set off as an independent city from 1914 to 1927 before being absorbed back into Shreveport. This promotional brochure from the later period of Cedar Grove's independence is for the all-Black subdivision of Oak Park. Similar ads appeared in the Shreveport Times in June 1925. Its front page looks like a newspaper from the outside, reading "Colored People, Own a Cedar Grove Lot for Only One Dollar a Week." The center spread boasts of "Colored People's Greatest Opportunity to Own Real Estate--To Be an Investor." An inset map of Cedar Grove shows the new 14-block subdivision, in relation to neighboring schools and churches. An inset of a poultry farmer suggests: "Make a flock of chickens pay for your home." Another inset asks: "1000 Colored Families Left the Rent-Paying Class Last Year--Are You Still Paying Rent?" The rear page has an aerial-view map showing the neighborhood's proximity to downtown Shreveport. None in OCLC.
