Notes: Annie Turnbo-Malone (1870-1957) was educated in the public school system of Metropolis and Peoria, IL. Based on her formulas for hair care for "colored" women, she founded the Poro College for Beauty Culture. While Madam C. J. Walker is perhaps best known in this field, at the peak of Turnbo-Malone's career she was reputed to be the wealthiest African-American woman in the United States.
