(BUSINESS.) WALKER, MADAME C. J. Autograph Letter Signed, 23 June, 1912 to her lawyer Freeman Ransom. 4to, 2 pages, written on three sides, with the original mailing envelope. Charlotte, South Carolina, 1912

  • Notes: a rare letter from madame walker to her lawyer and business manager, freeman b. ransom. At first she discusses things at home, "Glad to know that things are [?] at home. I was quite sure of Miss Lucy, but was afraid Miss Alice might decide to go back to School." She then gets down to business: "In regards to the house on Camp Street if you think it a bargain go ahead, as I am looking for bargains all the time. When you are ready, send me check for the amount to sign." She continues, regarding Ransom's housing situation and adds her regrets that she won't be back "for a time yet as money is flowing like water for me at this time, and I want to get mine now, as the time to strike is when the iron is hot, and it is surely hot just now. I will be very glad indeed if you would send Nettie's photos to me as I will be very glad to look into that sweet face again." As I think she is the sweetest girl that I have met for a long time. What has the W.C.A (YWCA?) done in regards to the Building? Have you paid my second payment yet? You look after all matters of importance for me. I want about 5000 more ins[urance] on the house and factory. I am sorry Lelia is going to N.Y. as I had first wrote her to come here as she could make so many places for me and that would help me to get through down here sooner. For if I get to all the places I am wanted, I will not get home this year and some of them I can't see but I can miss them too. It will mean so much to her in dollars and cents. Well I must close as I know you get tired trying to read this scratching, hoping you success and happiness, I am ever the same, Mme C.J. Walker. Love to Nettie. What about Willie? Will be here one week only."
