Canadian National Railways was formed in 1918, and ultimately became a conglomeration of many smaller railway companies. In 1923, when it took over the Grand Trunk Railway, it became the largest Canadian railway company (taking control of the three coast-to-coast Atlantic-to-Pacific rail lines in Canada -The Canadian Pacific, which was the first, Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and the Canadian Northern Railway).
