CABARET ROUMAIN-MONTAGNES RUSSES.

1889. Chaix, Paris.
471/2x333/4 inches.

  • Notes: Experimenting a little with each poster he designed, Cheret began to master the use of colors in his lithographs: He no longer systematically used the green-blue background, and began to use yellow in his characters. Cabaret Roumain is clearly a transition piece. The Montagnes Russe was a roller coaster, based on an American patent, that opened in Paris in 1888 on the Boulevard des Capucines--in the center of the grand boulevards district. For the 1889 exhibition, which attracted millions of visitors to the Eiffel Tower, organizers tried to hire special attractions for their showplaces-and the Montagnes Russes chose an exotic troupe of Rumanian gypsies. Cheret illustrates the scene, with the performance in full-swing, a crowd of people and a waitress dressed in traditional Rumanian attire. When the Rumanian show ended, the Montagnes Russes produced a show of Spanish dancers, for whom Cheret also designed a poster. When the Montagnes Russes closed in 1892 it was replaced by the Olympia, a music hall, and Cheret designed the poster announcing its opening as well.
