CABLE, GEORGE W. Group of 4 Autograph Letters Signed, "Go.W. Cable" or "G.W.C.," to Bookman Editor James MacArthur ("Dear Mr. MacArthur"), mostly concerning MacArthur''s proposal to adapt Cable''s novella Madame Delphine for the stage. Together 7 pages, 8vo or 4to; short closed tears to September letter. Northampton or New Haven, 1901-02

  • Notes: 26 June 1901: ". . . The dramatic possibilities of ''Madame Delphine'' have appealed to many. I talked it over with Barrie when I was with him in London. The difficulties are; first, that (as you say) it will not make a full night''s performance, and, second, the true heroine is not a young woman. . . ."
9 September 1901: ". . . As to ''The Cavalier'', it ought to be good, it took me considerably over two years to write it. Moreover, it ought to be my best, . . . for it is drawn from those vivid impressions with which an imaginative temperament is filled when first stepping out into manhood and into a world wrapped in the clouds and flame and uproar of war. . . ."
4 February 1902: ". . . I am ready to do anything, at any time, that will help you in the dramatization you contemplated, and, I hope, still design to do.
". . . I had a comical dream last night, in which ''Madame Delphine'' was brought out for its first performance, and Mr. Fisk told me--behind the scenes--that it was an utter failure, and sat down to ask the newspapers please to publish nothing about it. . . ."
