(CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH.) Autograph Letter Signed, from L. B. Valentine to her sister, describing their brother's (?) return with $23,000 worth of gold dust and his experiences in California. 3 pages, folded 4to sheet, blue paper; usual folds, minor spotting. New Orleans, 22 January 1850

  • Notes: "... The speculation has turned out very well and they will something more than double their investment when it shall all be settled... He thinks he has seen enough of California to last a life-time... Bradford was at Sacramento had five or six hundred dollars worth of gold dust and said that he could dig a plenty more when the water fell but the labor was almost entirely suspended for the winter and the diggers were flocking to the cities by thousands... John and Richard are making a good deal of money buying gold dust and having it coined..."
