(CALIFORNIA.) Baker, Edward Dickinson. Oration of Colonel E.D. Baker over the Dead Body of Broderick.
DEATH OF A CALIFORNIAN OPPONENT OF SLAVERY (CALIFORNIA.) Baker, Edward Dickinson. Oration of Colonel E.D. Baker over the Dead Body of Broderick. 4 pages on one sheet. 8vo, unbound, edges worn; 2 manuscript corrections in margins. [San Francisco, 1859?]
- Notes: David Colbreth Broderick was a U.S. senator from California who was shot to death in a duel that stemmed from his ardent anti-slavery stance. This funeral oration (by a future Oregon senator and Civil War general) praises Broderick''s character and quotes his dying words: "They have killed me because I was opposed to the extension of slavery and a corrupt Administration." This copy appears to be a corrected proof; no other copies in this format have been traced in libraries. 2 copies are known of a 10-page printing in a smaller format. Greenwood 1044 (10-page edition); not in Cowan California or Sabin.
