in Canada and Van Diemen's Land, During a Long Captivity; with Travels in California and Voyages at Sea. Frontispiece. 12mo, publisher's wrappers with a portait of Heustis, some light staining, some loss to top right corner; foxed, minor loss to the top right corner affecting the first few leaves. Boston, 1847

  • Notes: first edition of an early california item and a rare australian captivity narrative. "The original is not only a famous rarity, but an important early historical narrative as well. Captain Heustis contracted to take charge of the Grimes Rancho about 300 miles north of Monterey between the Sacramento and American Rivers. He reached Monterey on May 25, 1845 and reported to Consul Larkin. He spent months traveling up and down California, including a visit with Sutter at Nueva Helvetia (which is described at length) and a stay at Yerba Buena. The description of Upper California is of the highest interest, being one of the few we have at this period, immediately prior to the Conquest"--Eberstadt 134:132; Streeter Sale 2518; Graff 1874; Howes H449; Ferguson 4536.
