Stickeen, signed and inscribed on front free endpaper "To Mrs. A.R. Sargent, with sincere regard, John Muir, June 7, 1911." It is inscribed to botanist Charles Sprague Sargent's daughter-in-law Maria Cecelia de Acosta Sargent (1886-1970), a.k.a. Mrs. Andrew Robeson Sargent, described elsewhere as "an exceptionally pretty girl of Spanish origin" (Sutton, "Charles Sprague Sargent and the Arnold Arboretum," page 318). Eighth impression, Boston, 1910.
