(CALIFORNIA.) Mills, Edward. Clipper ship card for the steamship Brother Jonathan.

(CALIFORNIA.) Mills, Edward. Clipper ship card for the steamship Brother Jonathan. Advertising card, 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches, printed in red on glossy stock; minor wear, address written on verso. [New York], 26 February [1852]

  • Notes: The Brother Jonathan was one of the more famous California clipper ships. It was built by Edward Mills in 1851, who attempted to muscle into the territory established by Vanderbilt and others. The ship soon set a record for the round trip between New York and Panama at 31 days. Here Mills advertises an "independent line for California, opposition to the old monopoly at reduced rates of fare." Mills gave in to the monopoly later that year, selling the Brother Jonathan to Cornelius Vanderbilt. The ship wrecked off northern California in 1865 with the loss of almost all passengers and a vast quantity of gold. Some of the gold was recovered in a well-publicized salvage in 1996.
