CAMEO ENGRAVED AFTER RUBENS RUBENS, ALBERT. De re vestiaria veterum, praecipue de lato clavo, libri duo. 3 engraved folding plates, 9 text engravings, 7 of which are after Peter Paul Rubens (including the 3 folding plates). [28], 328 pages. 4to, contemporary calf, gilt spine with loss at ends, joints starting, dampstain extending from lower spine across rear cover; second folding plate with repaired clean tear to verso, 1-inch tear extending from right side across fold. Antwerp: Balthasaris Moreti, 1665

  • Notes: first edition of Rubens's posthumously published collection of essays on classical antiquities. It includes his treatises on two giant cameo gems in the collection of his father, Peter Paul Rubens, and is illustrated after his drawings. Another essay, De re vestiaria, contains one of the first discussions of dress and the toga of the ancients, illustrated by a plate containing the significance of Quintilian's eight different folds in the toga-drapery. The majority of Peter Paul's antique sculptures and gems were sold to the Duke of Buckingham and eventually given to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The museum also contains his painting of the giant cameo gem, Gemma Tiberiana (later identified as The Glorification of Germanicus) along with a corresponding drawing, both of which he prepared for a work on engraved gems which was never produced.
