Camille Pissarro

(1830-1903)

Paysage à Osny.

Drypoint printed in black on cream laid paper, 1887.
First state (of 2). Edition of 100. Signed and inscribed "no. 3" in pencil, lower margin. Published by André Marty for L'Estampe Originale, Paris. Delteil 70.
Plate: 4 1/2 x 6 1/4 in. (11.6 x 15.7 cm.), wide margins.

  • Notes:
This is one of only five intaglio prints by Pissarro that was published during his lifetime. He issued the other 120-plus etchings, aquatints and drypoints he made privately, in very small print runs, frequently of 20 impressions or fewer, in at least several separate working states.

Pissarro created Paysage à Osny as a pure drypoint in 1887, though it wasn't published in the art journal devoted to original fine art prints, L'Estampe Originale, until 1894. The artist then decided to return to work on the plate, burnishing away much of the heavy shadows in the foreground to create a more textured riverbank and printing a handful of proof impressions for himself. Delteil 70.
