CAMILLE PISSARRO
Effet de Pluie.

Etching and aquatint, 1879. 160x213 mm; 6 1/4x8 3/8 inches, full margins. Sixth state (of 6). Edition of only approximately only 8 to10 lifetime impressions in this state. Signed and inscribed "Épreuves d'artiste" in pencil, lower margin. A superb, richly-inked, early impression of this extremely scarce etching.

According to Shapiro, who describes the six different states of this etching, "By the sixth state the quality of light is altered with the addition of pronounced oblique strokes that remarkably simulate the effect of rain. Through Pissarro's [1830-1903] great technical finesse in applying the slashed lines, the senastion of rain is made convincing. His interest in this particular effect can be related to Japanese woodblock prints," ( Camille Pissarro The Impressionist Printmaker, Boston, 1973, catalogue number 17). Delteil 24.
