CAMILLE PISSARRO Le Bonne faisant son marché.

CAMILLE PISSARRO
Le Bonne faisant son marché.

Drypoint printed in dark, brownish black on cream laid paper, 1888. 200x138 mm; 8x5 1/2 inches, full margins. Fourth state (of 4). An artist's proof in this state, aside from the edition of 80 published for La Revue Indépendante, one of approximately only 15 artist's proofs in all four states combined. Signed, titled and inscribed "No. 1 Epreuve d'artiste" in pencil, lower left (written over the inscription "4e état epreuve définitif" in pencil). A superb, dark and richly-inked impression with warm plate tone.

One of only five etchings by Pissarro that was published during his lifetime. In both the first and fourth states, Le Bonne faisant son marché was issued in two separate editions of 80 impressions each in the French symbolist journal La Revue Indépendante.

The figure of a woman seen in profile in the foreground of the composition, with a bustling market scene in the background, was a arrangement Pissarro used frequently. She appears in Marchande de Marrons, drypoint, 1878, likely the first print Pissarro made working with Degas (there is an impression of this print with the inscription "épreuve tirée chez Degas" now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Delteil 15), and the better-known color drypoint, Marché de Gisoirs (Rue Cappeville), circa 1894 (see lot 315). The compositional device was also employed in paintings and drawings by Pissarro (Le marché de Gisors, Grande-Rue, 1885; Pissarro/Snollaerts 816, Le Marché aux grains à Pontoise, 1893; Pissarro/Snollaerts 1013 both now in private collections) Delteil 74.
