CAMPBELL, C. O

Fine pair of early portrait photos of Revs. John Jasper and James Holmes, by C. O. Campbell. Mounted oval albumen bust portraits of the famous preachers, in a single pebbled mat; with letterpress copyright notices mounted beneath each image; mat considerably soiled, but images clean; framed. Washington, 1879 Fine photographic portraits of Richmond's best-known black ministers, both of whose careers spanned the period from slavery, through Rebellion, and into Reconstruction. Much has been written on the career of John Jasper, but much less concerning James Holmes (an important reference to him is made in Simmon's Men of Mark). But the legacy of Holmes survived him - his son, John, was one of the founding members of the N.A.A.C.P.
