CAMPBELL, THOMAS. Two Autograph Letters Signed, "Tho's Campbell," to A.L. Gore ("My dear Miss Gore"),

REVEALING PUBLISHER STRATEGIES FOR PROFIT-MAKING CAMPBELL, THOMAS. Two Autograph Letters Signed, "Tho''s Campbell," to A.L. Gore ("My dear Miss Gore"), concerning the new edition of his poems and his autobiography. Together 6 pages, 8vo or 4to, each written on a single folded sheet; each with tissue repair on terminal page along center vertical fold. (MRS) London, 1; 13 October 1842

  • Notes: 1 October: ". . . I am miserably debilitated & depress''d. I hold the pen with fatigue. It would not daunt me if I were soon called out of this painful world. But I wish to live a year to finish a life of myself that I am writing to be left unpublish''d till my death when it will form a pretty thick volume . . . ."
13 October: ". . . There is a class of publishers even among those who are miscalled respectable, such rogues that if you commission them to get 1000 copies of a work printed, they will cause 1500 to be struck off and account to you for only the 1000. Now Moxon is not one of this category. He is incapable of doing anything fraudulent or illegal. At the same time, as it seems inwoven in the very nature of Trade to make men rapacious, and as drawing a close bargain is neither fraudulent nor illegal, Moxon is just such a screw driver as the rest of them. . . .
"I was frighten''d by the stagnant sale into compliance with his terms.
"Now I know exactly that he intended doing with my new forthcoming & handsome edition containing 54 vignettes steel and wood just as with last I sold him--namely to sell as few as he liked in a goodly time & then to buy them from me under my fear of a stopt sale for some four or five times more than the grocer would give for waste paper. . . ."
