(CANADA.) Chappell, Edward. Voyage of His Majesty's Ship Rosamond to Newfoundland and the Southern Coast of Labrador.
WITH EXTENSIVE AND IMPORTANT MARGINALIA (CANADA.) Chappell, Edward. Voyage of His Majesty's Ship Rosamond to Newfoundland and the Southern Coast of Labrador. 3 engraved plates, folding engraved map hand-colored in outline. 8vo, original boards, needs rebacking, with cloth slipcase; uncut; contemporary owner's inscription (T.B. Toker, White Bear Bay, Newfoundland, 1820) on front pastedown, Henry Marquand bookplate. London, 1818
- Notes: first edition. Includes extensive marginalia by Toker, a British naval officer from the Brig Drake, in some cases more interesting and detailed than Chappel's text. For example, Chappell records the capture of two Indian hostages (p. 185); Toker adds "No, only one . . . she was X-ened Mary March and died of decline in 7 weeks after her being captured and was carried back to the place where she was captured . . . in order that her friends might see she was not killed . . . I was in N.F. at the time. Mary March had a very beautiful hand that many a European lady might envy." McGill/Lande 122, Sabin 12006, TPL 941.
