Faria, a Brazilian caricaturist, painter, lithographer and poster designer, emigrated to France in 1882. In 1902, he created one of the first known cinema posters, for The Victims of Alcoholism. From 1902 until his death, he was the most prolific designer of posters for Pathé - completing around 300 - with titles such as Les Chiens Contrebandiers, L'Amant de la Lune, and Voyage Autour d'Une Étoile. Aside from his multitude of entertainment posters, he may be best recognized for his elegant and inviting winter and summer images for the Cachats-Majestic Hotel in Chamonix. The collective artwork that came out of his workshop posthumously was signed "Atelier Faria."
