The label on the cover is dated January 12, $2.75, in pen, and stamped File Copy Please Return to Publicity Department Random House, Inc. This proof was prepared from cut galleys typeset in October 1947; though the January 12th date is given here, actual publication was pushed back to the 19th. This copy was recorded as item 1a in the Capote section of Author Price Guides. Dickerson, MD., 2004.
