Caribbean travel album entitled "Cruise of the S. S. Kronprinzessin Cecilie, Feb. 10-25, 1913," containing 95 photographs of Jamaica, Cuba, and Panama (with scenes of the construction of the canal). Comprising 24 of Jamaica, 33 of Panama and 38 of Cuba. The pictures were sequenced by a passenger on the cruise ship, and feature commercial medium- and small-format photographs that capture the most touristic, or colorful, aspects of each country. The prints were specially made by the firm of Brown and Dawson, and purchased on board the ship. With Jamaican scenes of boys along a road, women washing clothes in a river, West Indian troops in Jamaica, a bird's eye view of King Street, a panoramic of government buildings, and banyan trees, and more. Among the tourist views are pictures of the Panama Canal, which were also captured by an accomplished photographer. The Cuban views focus on pictureque landscapes and street scenes, with a few pictures of people. Silver prints, 17 are approximately 7 1/2x9 1/4 inches (19.1x23.5 cm.), and smaller, each with a printed caption pasted below the photograph. Oblong folio, gilt-lettered leatherette, worn; contents clean and bright; with the card of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Spalding on the front pastedown. 1913

  • Notes: The photography studio of Brown and Dawson was a Stamford, Connecticut based firm that did a lot of work for cruises and expeditions. The label identifying them states: "We go to any part of the world on assignments requiring judgment and ability."
