(CARICATURE.) [Töepffer, Rodolphe.] The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck.
THE FIRST AMERICAN COMIC BOOK (CARICATURE.) [Töepffer, Rodolphe.] The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck. 80 pages. Oblong 8vo, publisher's wrappers, chipped and worn, rebacked; interior toned, moderate foxing. New York: Wilson & Company, circa 1847
- Notes: Generally considered to be the first American comic book. This work originally appeared in French as Les amours de Mr. Vieux Bois, was translated into English for an 1841 London edition, and was first issued in the United States in 1842 as a newspaper supplement by Wilson & Company. This edition is undated, but likely early. The wrapper offers "Timothy Crayon" as a pseudonym and gives 162 Nassau Street as the publisher's address, but the title page gives the address as "15 Spruce Street (late 162 Nassau Street)." Wilson was publishing from this new address by 1847.
