CARLOS GARDEL. 1928.

623/4x461/2 inches. H. Chachoin, Paris. Condition A-: repaired tear in bottom margin; discoloration in left and right margins; creases in margins, some affecting image. A full portrait of the performer dressed as a gaucho and leaning on his guitar. His presence is strengthened by the suggestion of a stage, and the vibrating background. Born in Toulouse in 1890, Gardel moved to Argentina just after his second birthday. He became the most popular tango singer in both Argentina and Europe, and performed extensively in New York and Paris. His fame was such that when he died in a plane accident in 1935 in Colombia, there was national mourning in Buenos Aires. This poster was most probably commissioned by Henry Varna for a revue at the Palace in which Gardel was performing. The image was also subsequently used on record sleeves. Weill/Rennert no. 79, p. 74, Colin et les Spectacles no. 141, p. 120.
