[CARLYLE, THOMAS.] Sartor Resartus. Edited by Charles Wheeler and LeBaron Russell. Unsigned preface by Ralph Waldo Emerson. 8vo, embossed cloth; faded, head of spine rubbed with loss; ownership label on pastedown; custom 1/2 cloth folding box with morocco spine labels. Boston, 1836
- Notes: first american edition and one of about 500 copies printed. Originally published in Fraser's Magazine, this predates the first published English edition by two years. Carlyle's largest readership was in New England and he remained immensely popular up to the Civil War. Although this first edition suffered a lack of subscribers, it was immediately popular and a second, regularly published edition came out in 1837.
