  • Notes: Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, was a prominent English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman and photographer. Although best known for novels 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass,' he also invented croquet, billiards, various forms of chess, scrabble, ways to divide certain numbers and two different forms of the Arabic zero.

Always eager to try new hobbies Carroll received camera equipment from his uncle, in 1856, and explored photography. He enjoyed portraiture but also photographed skeletons, dolls, dogs, statues, paintings, trees, scholars, scientists, and royalty. But it was his portraits of young girls that are most well known. Most of his surviving images depict the daughters of academics, royalty and aristocrats. Often these photographs of children were used as illustrations in his literary works.

A short time after he purchased his camera, four of his photographs were displayed at the Photographic Society of London, which facilitated a useful entrance into higher social circles. When word of Carroll's work spread, eager parents presented their children, who were often photographed with props.

Carroll abruptly ceased making photographs in 1880. Controversy about Carroll's work exists to this day, most notably his friendships with girls. Yet, his body of work reflects a Victorian understanding of children, who were seen as objects of beauty, unspoiled by civilization.
